You are enoug.
Yeah, you read that right. You are enoug.
Something I always tell people is that my high school kids at work teach me about the joys and struggles of the faith. It’s hard not to learn from them. And one of the greatest lessons they taught me, without intention, was that we are enoug.
Yes, it’s “enough” without the “h.”
Each year on our annual retreat, we build a make-shift chapel in one of the classrooms. It’s really the most comfortable place where the group gathers for prayer, group reflections, and personal time with Jesus. We have a crucifix, little altar, fairy lights, pillows and blankets, music, and a statue of the Blessed Mother. It’s more beautiful than you could ever image. It’s simple, it’s homey, it’s full of Christ’s love. Really, what more could we want? On the walls, we hang up signs, posters, whatever you want to call them, handmade with lots of love by the retreat team. Phrases like “I am worthy,” “I am loved,” “I am special,” you know the ones. The idea is that every time they looked up, they would see a reflection of Christ’s love and the team’s support.
As we were throwing out suggestions, one of my seniors and I said at the same time, “I am enough.” It’s a message we felt was incredibly important, especially on a retreat where we encourage everyone to come as they are.
So as this beautiful young woman was making her sign, she ran out of room. Her paper said, “I am enoug.” She didn’t have enough room to write the word “enough.” We all got a much-needed laugh out of it.
But recently, it’s got me thinking.
We are enough, even when we aren’t complete.
Even when we don’t feel like we do everything we can for Christ, we’re enough. Even though we haven’t fully lived out our stories yet, we’re enough. Even when we fall short, make mistakes, stray away, get distracted, we are enough. Even when things don’t go our way, or when feel like we didn’t have the time or space or opportunity, we did our best, and that’s what Jesus wants. We’re enoug, and enough, for Him. Always and forever, we’re enough for Jesus.
This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to live better lives, work harder, and do more for the good of the world and our relationship with Jesus. What this does mean, though, is that at any given moment, you are so truly loved. You are enough for Him, in every single season of life and state of being. As you are, right now, you are enough for Him.
Why? Because He made you in His image, and because He loves you, and because we’re His. We belong to Him.
Know this message, and live it: you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His, just as you are. Come to Him as you are.
You are enoug.
